This gentle and lovely treasure passed away on January 19, 2017 at the Fairview Manor (Almonte, ON.) in her 94th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Donald and her dear sister Eileen "Bunt" (Harry). Bunt and Valerie were known as the Gegg girls in Bedford, England, two beauties that strolled the Embankment arm in arm, worked side by side in the Women's Land Army during World War II and maintained a lifelong bond across the miles after Valerie started her new life in Canada with Donald at her side. Valerie is survived by her loving daughters Lynn (Larry) and Gail Ritchie (George), cherished grandsons Andrew (Tomás) and Adam, dear great grandson Jacob, and devoted nephew John Hornsby (Sandra) and his family in Bedford. Valerie made the world a better place for those who knew and loved her with a nature that enlivened, humour that delighted, wisdom that guided, a strength of character that inspired and love that protected and embraced. Valerie often mentioned how fortunate she was to have had a wonderful life beginning with a happy childhood in Bedford, and then an amazing husband, happy years in Victoria and Ottawa and a family that brought her joy and pride. We will have her with us always, in the beautiful memories she gave us and in the love for her that we will carry in our hearts forever. Thank you to to the wonderful staff members at Orchardview Living Centre and Fairview Manor for embracing Valerie with their hearts and caring hands, making her last years happy and comfortable. A special thank you to the outstanding and devoted care givers at Heritage House for surrounding Valerie with kindness and love during her last days.
